This unique recipe captures the essence of a classic birthday cake in a fun, crunchy topping, complete with rainbow sprinkles for a touch of festivity. Ideal for adding a pop of color and flavor to various desserts, this Birthday Cake Crumb recipe is easy to make and versatile. Follow this guide to create a delightful topping perfect for special occasions or add a bit of cheer to everyday treats.
Start by mixing the granulated sugar, light brown sugar, plain flour, baking powder, salt, and rainbow sprinkles in the bowl of a mixer. This combination of sugars and flour forms the base of your crumbs, with the sprinkles adding a playful burst of color. The baking powder helps to create a light, cake-like texture in the crumbs.
Add the grapeseed oil and clear vanilla extract to your low mixer. These wet ingredients bind the dry mixture, forming small, cake-like clusters. The grapeseed oil provides a neutral taste that lets the vanilla’s sweetness shine.
Spread the clusters evenly on a silicone baking sheet. Bake them in a preheated oven at 150°C to gently toast the crumbs, bringing out a rich, cakey flavor. The low temperature ensures they dry out without burning, achieving the perfect crunchy texture.
After baking for 20 minutes, let the crumbs cool completely. This cooling process is crucial, allowing the crumbs to set and harden, developing their signature crunch. Once cooled, the Birthday Cake Crumbs can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week or in the fridge or freezer for up to a month.
These Birthday Cake Crumbs are incredibly versatile and can be used as a topping for ice cream, cupcakes, or frosted cakes. They also work wonderfully folded into cookie dough or as a layer in parfaits and trifles. Their festive appearance and nostalgic flavor make them a hit in any dessert.
